Recently, the authorities in Ed-Dueim, White Nile state, arrested eight professors from Bakht Al-Ruda University following a widespread university strike that included dozens of government institutions.
A security source stated that a security force in Ed-Dueim conducted a raid on Saturday evening, arresting several professors and summoning one female professor from the university as well.
The source identified the detainees as Musa Al-Bour, Murtada Makashfi, Dahnoon, Jamal Mahjoub, and Islam Al-Kheer, without disclosing the names of the remaining detainees.
Furthermore, another source later confirmed that the authorities released six of those arrested, whilst two remained in detention without explanation.
According to the aforementioned source, some parties attempted to influence the professors in an effort to thwart the ongoing strike, regardless, the first day highlighted the reality of widespread participation.
Hence, the source indicated that approximately 36 public universities participated in the strike in response to a call from the Sudanese Universities Teaching Staff Committee (LAGSU).
The Committee had previously announced the initiation of a comprehensive strike beginning on Sunday, March 29th, after attempts to reach reasonable solutions with the relevant authorities regarding the professors’ demands were met with failure.
