Journalist Qurashi Awad Arrested

The de facto authorities in Port Sudan arrested journalist “Qurashi Awad” in the city of “Berber,” River Nile state, in a development that perfectly encapsulates the state of blatant and continued targeting of press freedoms.

The Sudanese Journalists Network (SJNet) condemned the arrest of their colleague Qurashi Awad, considering it an attempt to silence dissenting voices, in an effort to suppress awareness and enlightenment. The Network emphasized that Awad had not committed any crime warranting punishment or prosecution.

Furthermore, the Network shared that instead of addressing the crushing social and economic crises resulting from the ongoing war and destruction, the de facto authorities have chosen to evade responsibility by tightening their grip on security, employing repressive practices reminiscent of the era of the ousted Bashir regime.

According to the (SJNet), the afore referenced repeated violations are a clear indication and irrefutable proof that the essence of these practices has yet to change following the fall of the Muslim Brotherhood regime. In fact, the current security doctrine is effectively reproducing the same methods of repression, incompetence, and administrative as well as political failure employed by the former regime, relying on the same old tools to silence free voices.

In addition, the Network warned against the consequences of continued arbitrary arrests, which’ll only serve to exacerbate the already tense situation. It emphasized that suppressing honest voices will not obscure the tragic reality the Sudanese citizens continue to suffer through, on the contrary, it’ll instead deepen the current regime’s isolation.

The Sudanese Journalists Network further demanded the immediate and unconditional release of their colleague, Qurashi Awad, along with all political prisoners and activists, whose numbers are increasing daily in the regime’s prisons.

In conclusion, the (SJNet) went on to affirm that the only viable path for the Sudanese people, both inside and outside the country, to confront this hegemony and injustice is to adhere to organized resistance, continue the peaceful struggle, and persevere on the path of revolution until complete liberation is achieved and a State of citizenship and freedom is established.
