Protesters Block Al Gash Bridge in Kassala

On Monday, angry protesters blocked Al-Gash Bridge, which connects the eastern and western parts of the city of Kassala, demanding the arrest of those responsible for the murder of a minor.

Hamrour Hussein, a civil leader in Kassalastated that the police force dispersed the protesters and reopened the bridge after it had been closed for several hours.

Sources indicated that a number of protesters were injured and taken to the hospital. Adding that protesters accused the police of arresting an injured protester -from a gunshot- and hence preventing him from receiving the necessary medical treatment.

In addition, a16-year-old girl was tortured to death last Monday, and her body was mutilated, which naturally sparked a wave of protests, with protesters demanding that authorities arrest the perpetrators and promptly bring them to justice, amidst fears of renewed tribal clashes.

Eastern Sudan has witnessed frequent protests for various reasons, as main roads were blocked and government facilities were shut down as well.
