HRW: The Sudanese Army detains and tortures civilians and will be held accountable

The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) along with its affiliated militias, according to a press statement issued by Human Rights Watch (HRW), “Have arbitrarily detained, tortured, and otherwise ill-treated civilians in areas under their control, denying them due process rights.” The organization added that “International as well as regional actors ought to make clear to the military leadership that they will be held accountable.”
In the aforementioned statement issued today, Wednesday, Human Rights Watch shared that “The Sudanese Armed Forces and its allies have led a campaign of fear and retaliation against people they label collaborators, because of their identity, humanitarian work, or political activity or simply for having lived under the Rapid Support Forces’ control.”
Furthermore, the organization warned the Sudanese Army and its militias against arbitrary detention, torture, and ill-treatment, and called for compensation for detainees and their families. In addition, the organization stressed that international as well as regional actors should make it clear to the military leadership that they will be held accountable and urged them to take steps to end the abuses.
The statement issued by (HRW) similarly noted that the Office of the Attorney General in Sudan denied to Human Rights Watch the occurrence of any cases of arbitrary arrests, torture, or ill-treatment of civilians.
