Daglo Discusses Developments in Sudan with Haavisto

His Excellency Lt. Gen. Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, President of the Presidential Council and Head of the Sudan Founding Alliance (Tasis), discussed with Mr. Pekka Haavisto, the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Sudan, the political and security developments in the country, as well as the humanitarian situation and efforts to achieve peace and stability.
The Chairman of the Presidential Council welcomed the Personal Envoy, wishing him success in his new mission, and emphasized that the Government of Peace and Unity is ready for full cooperation with the United Nations and to put forth diligent efforts to provide the necessary assistance to alleviate the suffering of the Sudanese people.

Furthermore, the Chairman of the Presidential Council provided the UN Personal Envoy with a detailed explanation of the main reasons that ignited the ongoing war in the country and the involvement of the terrorist Islamic Movement as well as its affiliated Armed Forces in its instigation. Moreover, he discussed the historical roots of the Sudanese crisis, which have significantly contributed to the ongoing cycle of wars in Sudan. He noted that a number of international parties view the Sudanese issue with a degree of oversimplification, failing to consider the true causes of the continued wars and the failure to achieve comprehensive and sustainable peace. He added that the Sudanese problem is a historical one and ought to be resolved by addressing the root causes and rebuilding the State on new, just foundations that serve to eliminate injustice and marginalization.
The Head of the Sudan Founding Alliance (Tasis) reiterated the government’s firm commitment to the voluntary unity of Sudan, both its land and its people, as well as its determination to put forth efforts by all means necessary to thwart the attempts of the terrorist Islamic Movement and its affiliated Armed Forces to tear Sudan apart and dismantle its social fabric, in a similar scenario to what took place in regards to South Sudan.
He went on to affirm that the Sudan Founding Alliance and Government, which constitute the largest historical bloc in Sudan with its political and social diversity, possess a viable vision for resolving Sudan’s accumulated crises. Moreover, said vision is embodied in the Transitional Constitution and the Sudan Founding Charter, through which radical solutions to the country’s problems as well as the achievement of its voluntary unity have been formulated.
In addition, the Chairman of the Presidential Council called on the United Nations to expedite the establishment of its offices in areas under the control of the Peace Government in order to provide humanitarian aid to civilians who have been politically punished by the Port Sudan terrorist group, as the latter is using hunger as a weapon of war to starve millions of the Sudanese people.

In conclusion, Lt. Gen. Mohamed Hamdan Daglo emphasized commitment to conducting a transparent and impartial investigation into the party responsible for igniting the ongoing war in Sudan and holding them accountable for all violations suffered by the Sudanese people, most notably of which is the use of internationally prohibited chemical weapons. He indicated that this constitutes a fundamental step towards ending the war and achieving peace in the country, adding that this particular demand is non-negotiable under any circumstances.
For his part, the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy for Sudan, Mr. Pekka Haavisto, affirmed the United Nations’ endeavor to end the war in the country and achieve peace, noting that he had listened to a number of parties in the context of searching for the most successful ways that could lead to a solution to the crisis, he further expressed appreciation for the President of the Presidential Council’s choice to respond, to hold the meeting as he seeks to exchange views and learn about the overall situation in the country.
