Macron: International commitment to end the war in Sudan and support civilians

The French President, Emmanuel Macron affirmed the escalating international efforts to end the war in Sudan, noting a strong collective commitment from several countries as well as international partners to work towards implementing a ceasefire and support civilians affected by the worsening humanitarian crisis.

Furthermore, the French President shared, speaking from the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, that he held “excellent discussions” with ambassadors and special envoys involved in the Sudanese file, adding that the participants stressed the need to use “all available means” to advance the peace process and end the ongoing war in Sudan.

He went on to explain that the meetings witnessed broad consensus in regards to the importance of intensifying collective efforts to de-escalate the conflict and silence the guns, emphasizing the continued coordination amongst key international parties to support political settlement efforts and the humanitarian response.

In another statement, Macron welcomed the joint meeting in Addis Ababa, including representatives and diplomats from France, Germany, Italy, and Canada, along with numerous ambassadors as well as special envoys involved in the Sudanese file. He emphasized that the aforementioned are part of efforts aimed at reinforcing the international pressure to end the war and protect civilians.

He further noted that the international community is increasingly aware of the scale of the humanitarian catastrophe in Sudan, given the escalating number of victims and displaced persons, in addition to the lack of basic services, which, in turn, necessitates urgent as well as coordinated action to support peace efforts and facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid.

Macron’s statements coincide with accelerated diplomatic efforts led by regional and international actors to revive the political process in Sudan, amidst UN warnings of a worsening humanitarian situation and continued violations against civilians in various conflict zones.
