SJS condemns arrest, search of phones and detention of journalists

The Sudanese Journalists Syndicate (SJS) strongly condemned the arrest of journalist Muneer Al-Teriki by the Sudanese General Intelligence Service (GIS) from his home last Friday in the Nuri area of Northern state. He was released on Sunday after (48) hours of detention.

According to a statement, the Syndicate documented repeated incidents of arrests of journalists by several Security Agencies across the country, these incidents amounted to the level of searching their mobile phones, without providing any reasons or explanations.

The (SJS) warned Security Agencies against resorting to arrest and using it as a weapon against journalists, considering the action a serious violation of freedom of expression. The Sudanese Syndicate called on all journalists to report any violations they might face.

Press freedoms and violations against journalists are facing a state of significant deterioration, following the outbreak of the ongoing war in Sudan, with more than (30) journalists killed and more than (500) violations against journalists documented throughout the aforementioned period of time.
