The AU and UAE stress importance of an immediate and unconditional humanitarian truce in Sudan

The African Union Commission (AUC) and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) emphasized the necessity of an immediate and unconditional humanitarian truce, a permanent ceasefire, unimpeded humanitarian access throughout Sudan, accountability for violations of the International Humanitarian Law, and the establishment of an independent civilian government that reflects the aspirations of the Sudanese people. 

Furthermore, they endorsed the Joint Statement issued by the African Union Commission and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) on “September 14th, 2025,” reiterating their welcome of the Joint Statement issued by the Quad on “September 12th, 2025,” as well as the High-Level Humanitarian Conference statement at the African Union Summit in “February 2025.” 

The (AUC) and (UAE) welcomed the regional and international efforts put forth to address the humanitarian crisis, in addition, they condemned the atrocities committed against civilians by the parties to the conflict. Moreover, they went on to reaffirm their support for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Sudan, as well as highlight the necessity of reaching a peaceful settlement. 

Both parties reaffirmed their support for Somalia’s Sovereignty, territorial integrity, security, and stability. 

According to the final communiqué of the high-level meeting held in Addis Ababa between the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, and the UAE Minister of State, Sheikh Shakhbout bin Nahyan Al Nahyan, the (AUC) and (UAE) exchanged views on the dynamics of peace and security in the Horn of Africa, emphasizing the strong correlation between stability in the Horn of Africa and security in the Arabian Gulf, including maritime security and regional prosperity. Moreover, the meeting discussed the prospect of deepening cooperation between the two regions within the framework of shared priorities to support peace, stability, and sustainable development. 

In addition, the two sides affirmed the importance of the 2026 UN Water Conference, co-hosted by the UAE and Senegal, as a key opportunity to strengthen global action on water security. They agreed to cooperate closely in an effort to achieve tangible, effective, and measurable results across Africa through initiatives such as the “Mohamed bin Zayed Water Initiative.” 

The concluding statement noted that the meeting built upon the first round of political consultations held in Abu Dhabi on “September 13th, 2015,” within the framework of the “2019 Memorandum of Understanding,” and reaffirmed the shared commitment of both sides to further strengthen the partnership between the United Arab Emirates and the African Union. 

Additionally, they agreed on the importance of the “2063 Agenda,” particularly the flagship initiative of “Silencing the Guns by 2030,” as well as the African Continental Free Trade Area, emphasizing the interconnectedness of peace, security, trade, and development. In which regard, they went on to reiterate the necessity of intensifying cooperation in an effort to support these strategic priorities, recognizing that sustainable peace underpins economic integration, and that expanding trade and investment contributes to achieving stability, resilience, and sustainable development in Africa.
