They further stressed that any legitimacy built under threat and coercion is destined to fall apart.

In addition, Al-Burhan’s recent activities perfectly highlight the following; his struggle is far from being limited to managing the ongoing war, for it expands to encompass his desire to consolidate his position in Sudan’s future, at a time when demands are put forth -calling for a civilian transition and an end to the hegemony of the military and Islamist forces over political decision-making.

In which context, Urwa Al-Sadiq, a leader in Sudan’s National Umma Party (NUP) stated; the Sudanese dialogue, being personally overseen by Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, reveals a clear contradiction.

He explained that a national dialogue requires the existence of a party capable of providing trust, freedom, and political security, and one that accepts -in advance- that the dialogue’s outcomes may differ from the originally expected results, particularly in reference to issues concerning justice and transitional justice.

Al-Sadiq further detailed to (Erem News) that Al-Burhan’s track record following the (October 25th, 2021) coup has consistently presented a contradictory model. For he chose to undermine the transitional partnership through a coup, to dissolve its institutions that opposed Al-Bashir’s ousted regime, arresting political figures and revolutionaries, in addition to violently dispersing and killing protesters, in a rather inhumane manner.

He pointed out that Al-Burhan was party to political understandings and agreements -through which he pledged to restore the transition, only for those pledges to be reduced to nothing when he withdrew his military delegation from the workshop on reforming the Security and Military Institutions.

Urwa Al-Sadiq went on to future explain that following the outbreak of the ongoing war in Sudan, the discourse of treason, mobilization, and the formation of ideological militias authorized -by Al Burhan- to fight, gained significant momentum, which, in turn, exposed civilians, politicians, and activists alike to extrajudicial arrests, persecution, and trials in relation to accusations of “collaboration” and bias. The aforementioned were, as well, legitimized through Al-Burhan by adopting the practices and policies of “Strange Faces,” which, naturally, served to exacerbate the issue further, for it relates to the absence of any semblance of favorable conditions that would make for a genuine dialogue in the first place.

The leader in Sudan’s National Umma Party shared that Al-Burhan’s plot is to transform the proposed project into a political selection process under the authority of arms. Civilian forces and a political elite that accept the Port Sudan framework are summoned to this process, and figures/fronts associated with the ousted regime and its Islamic Movement are reinstated. The results are then presented as a “Sudanese Consensus,” following a formula similar to that of the ousted president, Omar Al-Bashir, as Al-Burhan does believe that such actions will grant the current authority “legitimacy.”

Moreover, Al-Sadiq emphasized that a dialogue with a starting point pre-determined by Al-Burhan, who selects the participants, sets its parameters, controls the surrounding security and media landscape, and then reserves the right to accept or reject the outcomes, becomes more akin to a reshuffling of the political landscape around the existing power structure.

He added that the real concern for Sudanese citizens lies in the return of the former regime’s networks to the public sphere and State institutions following the October coup, starting from Al-Burhan’s office and down to the lowest-ranking ministry in Khartoum.

According to Al-Sadiq, Al-Burhan is not treating such networks as a minor detail, for they have become part of the crisis of independent decision-making within the Port Sudan camp. Furthermore, the war has granted Islamist-affiliated militias new military and political space, and the greater the reliance on them, the higher the cost of disengaging from them, because they now possess weapons, organization, rhetoric, and networks of vested interests.

Urwa concluded his remarks by asserting that Al-Burhan wishes to conduct a dialogue about the future of the State whilst the political environment itself remains burdened under the shadows of war, mobilization, arrests, trials, and accusations of treason. This goes to simply confirm the failure of his project and his dialogue even before it begins, given the widespread rejection of this event, including by the Sudanese National Umma Party.

For his part, the Writer and Political Analyst, Ammar Saeed stated that genuine Sudanese dialogue requires certain prerequisites before any calls for it can be made. These include ending the war, protecting civilians, releasing political prisoners and those detained in the dungeons of “Sirkab” and other prisons, ensuring the participation of all Sudanese citizens, and establishing regional as well as international guarantees that prevent the use of force to veto any agreement.

Saeed shared to (Erem News) that Sudan needs to end the proliferation of armies and armed groups, re-establish a single, professional, national military institution, and remove political as well as ideological organizations from the Regular Forces. As it’s unacceptable, he argued, for those who bear arms to be the ones granting civilians the space within which to determine the extent of their future authority.

The Writer and Political Analyst further emphasized that Al-Burhan ought to cease using State institutions for his own personal gain, reiterating that Al-Burhan is no longer an acceptable option to a broad segment of the Sudanese population, given the ongoing crimes committed against them. Therefore, the legitimacy he seeks will not be found, and his plans are doomed to failure.

Sudanese politicians stated that the Commander-in-Chief of the Port Sudan Forces, Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, is continuing his relentless efforts to seek political legitimacy by attempting to win over civilian and political forces, including the National Umma Party (NUP), within Sudan.
