Hajj Majid Suwar, a leading figure in the Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood, recently made statements explicitly calling for the use of internationally prohibited chemical weapons to resolve the ongoing conflict in the country.<\/p>\n
The United Civil Forces Alliance (UCF) condemned the aforementioned \u201cinflammatory statements,\u201d considering them \u201can unprecedented moral and political decline, revealing a horrific disregard for civilian lives and human rights, as well as a blatant violation of all international laws and conventions that prohibit the use of this particular type of internationally prohibited weapons.\u201d<\/p>\n
In a statement, the Alliance shared that the demand to “grant the military establishment free rein” to use lethal force, including internationally prohibited chemical weapons, is nothing but a blatant call for organized terrorism against the Sudanese people. Moreover, the statement went on to confirm that some factions within the Muslim Brotherhood no longer view Sudan as a homeland to be preserved, but rather as an open arena for settling scores, even at the expense of innocent lives.<\/p>\n
Utter Failure <\/strong><\/p>\n For his part, Osman Abdel Rahman Suleiman, the official spokesperson for the (UCF) in Sudan, stated that such calls reflect a clear state of despair and confusion within the ranks of Islamist officers in the military establishment, after their failure to achieve any military or political victory on the ground.<\/p>\n He added to (Erem News) that resorting to the threat of utilizing weapons of mass destruction reflects a state of utter failure to construct a vision and an inability to offer any genuine national solutions, which, in turn, is pushing them to adopt disastrous options that will only serve to deepen the crisis and prolong the humanitarian suffering.<\/p>\n Furthermore, Suleiman explained that in light of these dangerous developments, the international community is obligated to uphold its moral and legal responsibilities, to take proactive and decisive steps to deter such threats, and support the Sudanese civilians.<\/p>\n He called for an urgent international investigation into these statements and for holding accountable all those who promote or advocate the use of internationally prohibited weapons, in an effort to ensure that Sudan does not sink further into the quagmire of humanitarian catastrophe that threatens the security and stability of the entire region.<\/p>\n \u201cLethal Force\u201d He added to (Erem News) that such statements reflect a dangerous escalation in political and military rhetoric as well as a development that raises valid concerns in regards to the nature of the tools that might be utilized in the conflict.<\/p>\n Furthermore, Karbino pointed out that this type of rhetoric cannot be viewed in isolation from a long history of internal wars linked to widespread accusations of excessive force used by the Muslim Brotherhood (the Islamic Movement) in Sudan against innocent civilians in Darfur, South Kordofan, and the Blue Nile.<\/p>\n He explained that the United States’ decision to designate the Muslim Brotherhood in Sudan as a “Terrorist Organization” was linked to previous hardline American stances towards groups and Movements associated with political Islam in various contexts, particularly when they are linked to violence or threats to regional stability. He cited regional as well as international organizations and eyewitnesses who have reported the group’s use of internationally prohibited chemical weapons in Khartoum, Al-Jazeera, and Kordofan.<\/p>\n The writer and political analyst further indicated that the fundamental problem lies in the mindset that justifies the achievement of decisive military solution by any means. Which is an approach the organization has long adopted across the countries it has managed to control and where the group secured a presence. Hence, when the term “lethal force” is presented as a viable option, it raises genuine concerns about a slide towards the use of internationally prohibited weapons, even if not explicitly declared.
