Ibrahim Al-Mirghani, the Minister of Cabinet Affairs in the Government of Peace and Unity stated that relations between the Muslim Brotherhood in Sudan and Iran dates back many years, describing it as “deep and complex” encompassing military, security, and economic aspects. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The aforementioned relations contributed to transforming Sudan into a center for manufacturing as well as supplying weapons to various Iranian regional proxies and agents, in addition to converting the Sudanese Armed Forces’ bases on the Red Sea into Iranian monitoring platforms for passing ships. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to Al-Mirghani, Tehran had put forth efforts -during previous periods- to establish a military manufacturing infrastructure inside Sudan. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
He further pointed to the recent establishment of advanced manufacturing facilities for producing sophisticated weapons, including drones, in addition to the use of domestic technologies and facilities for intelligence and espionage purposes, particularly in the Red Sea region. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
In response to a question regarding the current role of the Sudanese Armed Forces in light of the situation and the Iranian escalation in the region, Al-Mirghani stated that the Sudanese Army is experiencing a period of “extreme weakness” as a result of the war’s repercussions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Iran exploited this situation to its advantage by supplying the Sudanese Army with weapons in exchange for access to use its Red Sea bases to carry out espionage missions targeting maritime traffic and providing intelligence to the Houthis in Yemen to attack naval vessels. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Furthermore, the Minister of Cabinet Affairs added that coordination operations, including the procurement of weapons from Iran, continued -undeterred- over the past two years through meetings that included military and security figures, members of the Muslim Brotherhood, and Iranian representatives. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
He explained that Iran now possesses influence over the Red Sea thanks to the Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood, moreover, it has a presence throughout Sudan as well, as evidenced by reports of Iranian experts being killed in Sudan, the most recent incident of which, was the killing of a number of Iranians during the fighting operations that took place in Kosti, Sudan. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
He went on to share that Iran uses the group as a “cat’s paw” in Africa in an attempt to spread its ideology and expand its network of proxies in African countries. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWhen the Iranian Cultural Center was closed in 2015, it was later discovered that the Iranian Cultural Attach\u00e9’s office employed over (1,000 individuals). The aforementioned number is rather excessive for an attach\u00e9’s office. Hence, investigations revealed that these employees were engaged in liaising with other terrorist organizations, including Boko Haram in Nigeria, jihadists in Libya, and Al-Shabaab in Somalia.\u201d according to Al-Mirghani. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
He pointed out that the relationship between the two sides is not limited to the military sphere, but extends to intellectual and organizational roots dating back to before the Iranian Revolution. He cited Ali Khamenei’s translation of several books by the thinker Sayyid Qutb, including \u201cMilestones\u201d and \u201cThe Future of This Religion,\u201d as evidence of a significant development since the late 1980s, coinciding with the Muslim Brotherhood’s rise to power in Sudan in (1989). <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Additionally, he stated that relations between Iran and Sudan began with Iran providing a loan of( $79 million), which, with interest, reached ($800 million) by the early 1990s. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
He explained that cooperation between the two sides evolved into the establishment of military manufacturing projects through an Iranian investment of ($200 million). <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Furthermore, he pointed out that these industries weren’t intended for domestic use, but rather to serve other parties in the region, including Hamas, Islamic Jihad, and other organizations affiliated with Iran. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Regarding the management of this issue, Al-Mirghani shared that coordination takes place through a system that includes Iranian and Sudanese military as well as security entities within the Islamic organization, including the Sudanese Army and the iIntelligence Service. He emphasized that these institutions are “part of a broader network that manages relations with Iran.” <\/p>\n\n\n\n
