The United Arab Emirates (UAE) announced before the Security Council an additional donation of ($100 million) to support humanitarian operations in Darfur, mere hours after its Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Amb. Mohammed Abu Shihab, accused the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) of \u201cdestroying its own country\u201d and \u201cobstructing relief efforts.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The announcement came during an emergency session of the Security Council, where Amb. Abu Shihab, in his urgent statement, directly accused the Sudanese Army of being responsible for \u201cviolating the humanitarian ceasefire and obstructing all relief efforts,\u201d in one of the strongest statements since the outbreak of the ongoing conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Furthermore, the Ambassador called on all warring parties in Sudan to \u201cfully adhere to their obligations under International Humanitarian Law,\u201d emphasizing the need to provide safe humanitarian corridors and ensure unimpeded access for aid to those in need, particularly the most vulnerable groups such as women, children, and the elderly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The UAE\u2019s Permanent Representative went on to stress that \u201cThe continued obstruction of humanitarian aid is tantamount to a death sentence for thousands of civilians,\u201d reiterating the importance of holding those responsible for committing such violations accountable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The recently announced ($100 million) humanitarian aid package is earmarked to support life-saving operations in and around the city of El-Fasher, where the humanitarian crisis is worsening amidst widespread famine and escalating clashes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
