Following the Drone Attacks on Port Sudan

Popular rejection of relocating the administrative capital to Atbara

Community figures as well as societal components in the River Nile state were quick to reject the declaration of Atbara as an alternative capital for the government loyal to the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the dissolved National Congress Party (NCP).

One of the city’s notables stated from Cairo, “We refuse the concept of Atbara becoming a headquarters for the remnants of the ousted regime after their failure in Khartoum.” He explained that Atbara gained nothing from Al-Bashir’s rule except destruction.

Activists affiliated with the Resistance Committees considered the aforementioned intention to utilize the city as an alternative headquarters merely aims at destroying it, in a similar manner to Khartoum and Port Sudan, emphasizing that the solution begins with removing the Islamists and negotiating for peace.
