Dengue Fever plagues citizens following return to Khartoum

The spokesperson for the Preliminary Committee of the Sudanese Doctors Syndicate, Sayed Mohamed revealed that more than 200 new cases of dengue fever, including 39 deaths, have been recorded in Khartoum state. Hence, the aforementioned development brings to mind the warnings previously issued by experts and doctors against citizens returning to Khartoum due to the serious effects of the Sudanese Armed Forces’ documented use of internationally prohibited chemical weapons in the capital last year.
The spokesperson explained that the most vulnerable groups constituted the majority of the deaths, with 22 women and 6 children, amidst a severe shortage of basic medical supplies.
Furthermore, Sayed Mohamed indicated that these statistics by no means reflect the true extent of the disaster due to the understandable difficulty of collecting comprehensive data. He warned of a potential resurgence in the epidemic curve after a period of decline, as a result of environmental deterioration compound with the absence of preventative measures.
In conclusion, the spokesperson for the Preliminary Committee of the Sudanese Doctors Syndicate attributed the most recent escalation of infections to administrative negligence and the lack of institutional intervention. Moreover, according to reports hospitals are witnessing a state of overcrowding, coupled with a severe shortage of intravenous fluids and life-saving medications.
