Human Rights Organizations called tointervene to save five detainees from one family in Abu Hamad

Recently, the father of one of the detainees in the prison of Abu Hamad, in River Nile state appealed to the international community and human rights organizations, calling for urgent intervention to save the lives of several young men who have been detained by the state’s de facto authorities for months under what the father described as “harrowing” conditions، and without any charges being brought against them.

The father, Ahmed Adam Ibrahim, stated that the five detainees are: Badr el-Din Ahmed Adam, Ibrahim Adam Ibrahim, Musa Amin Ibrahim, Ahmed Suleiman Ibrahim, and Qasim Ahmed Mohammed. He noted that all the aforementioned names are members of the same family who hail from the Haskaniya area in North Darfur state.

Furthermore, he explained in a press statement that the young men traveled to the locality of Abu Hamad last February to work in mining, however, they decided to return after several months due to the poor financial returns. He noted that they stayed in a hotel for several days before the location was raided at dawn on April 24th, they were promptly arrested along with the hotel owner and a number of other guests.

According to the father, the young men were taken to interrogation centers in Abu Hamad, then transferred to Atbara, before being returned to Abu Hamad Prison, where they remained in detention ever since. He explained that the authorities confiscated their mobile phones under the pretext of forensic examination, despite investigators’ confirmation that no crime had been proven against them.

Significant Deterioration

Ahmed Adam Ibrahim pointed out that the detainees’ health was significantly deteriorating due to the harrowing conditions of detention and harsh treatment, stressing that their families were increasingly concerned for their safety. He appealed to human rights and humanitarian organizations to intervene to save their children and guarantee their release.

During his recent visit to Sudan, the UN High Commissioner’s Designated Expert on the situation of Human Rights in Sudan, Radhouane Nouicer, expressed his concern in regards to the continued imposition of emergency laws at the federal and State levels.

He explained that his priorities focused on four main issues: Protecting civilians, facilitating humanitarian operations, accountability and preventing impunity, in addition to facilitating human rights and humanitarian organizations’ efforts. Nevertheless, he went on to stress that he had yet to note any “significant positive developments,” citing in particular the recent trials, which he described as “harsh and lacking in due process guarantees.”
