Cairo refuses to receive Kamil Idris

Senior diplomatic sources reported that Egyptian authorities have postponed the occasion of receiving the Sudanese Prime Minister of the de facto government in Port Sudan, Kamil Idris, who was scheduled to begin his first official visit to Cairo on Monday. This incident, however, reflects the growing apathy in relations between the two sides.

Furthermore, the previously announced visit is Idris’s first following his appointment. However, local press sources revealed that several regional capitals have yet to respond to similar requests for a visit from Idris, indicating the growing diplomatic isolation of the Port Sudan government.

In a brief statement posted on his official page on the (X) platform, Idris announced the postponement of his visit to Cairo without providing any clarifications, stating only that the visit was postponed to a later date that has yet to be determined.

Such ambiguity in the official position coincided with political analyses predicting escalating tensions between the Sudanese Armed Forces’ leadership and the Egyptian regime.

Following his appointment by the Commander-in-Chief of the Sudanese Army, Kamel Idriss has proceeded to establish a de facto authority in Port Sudan, including dozens of ministers affiliated with the Islamic Movement and the National Congress Party (NCP). The aforementioned has sparked widespread controversy in Sudanese and international political circles, given the ideological background of these appointments. Nonetheless, despite his attempts to legitimize his authority, Idriss has failed to transfer it to the capital, Khartoum. Reports continue to indicate that construction work is underway on his residence in Port Sudan, which has become a temporary Administrative Center for the country’s military authority.
