UN warns of imminent floods in Sudan

Recently, the United Nations sounded the alarm about the worsening humanitarian crisis in Sudan, warning of dire consequences of the rainy and flooding season expected to begin soon and continue until October.

Amidst the ongoing conflict and violence forcing civilians into continuous displacement, the international organization fears that the floods could disrupt humanitarian access and increase the risk of epidemics.

Furthermore, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) expressed grave concern, noting that the floods could significantly hinder land access to affected areas, making it more difficult to deliver critical supplies to those in need.

These warnings come at a time when Sudan is experiencing a severe shortage of humanitarian funding, limiting organizations’ ability to pre-position critical supplies, further exacerbating the situation on the ground, especially given that nearly half a million people were affected by floods last year.
