The Rapid Support Forces in the North: Influence and strategic gains in the war

Reactions have been circulating in Sudanese political circles regarding the significant advance of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and their control -on Wednesday- of the border triangle area linking Sudan, Egypt, and Libya, located in the far north of the country. This development has been described as a major leap forward in the war.

The Sudan Founding Alliance (Tasees), the largest political and military coalition in the country, considered the liberation of the area from the control of the terrorist Port Sudan gang and their jihadist brigades to be a “national epic” due to its strategic depth, which serves numerous purposes.

The border triangle area is an important crossing point for border trade, benefiting Sudanese people from their plundered resources, which previously went to the Muslim Brotherhood, to finance their terrorist operations in the region.

The Founding Alliance shared in a statement on Thursday that with the fall of the border triangle in the north, all of Sudan’s borders have been liberated, except for its border with Eritrea and the remainder of the northern border with Egypt, which will continue to be liberated, along with the entire country, from this group.

The Rapid Support Forces -the largest military force in the Sudan Founding Alliance- control the country’s borders with South Sudan, the Central African Republic, and Chad to the west, as well as part of the eastern border with Ethiopia, effectively besieging  and confining Al-Burhan’s militia to narrow areas in the center and northern parts of the country.

According to the statement, the accusations the Port Sudan group is attempting desperately to promote against the Libyan National Army, led by retired Maj. Gen. Khalifa Haftar, of interfering in the Sudanese conflict are false allegations that have been routinely made against friendly countries in the region.

The Alliance indicated that liberating the northern borders with Egypt and Libya is a crucial step towards drying up the most dangerous crossings of organized crime that is directly linked to the activities of the international terrorist organization-the Muslim Brotherhood- in the region.

In its statement, (Tasees) emphasized that the Rapid Support Forces’ full control over this significantly strategic border area enhances regional security and mitigates the influx of irregular movement that poses a threat to the security and stability of international as well as regional partners

Lina Mahdi, a prominent leader in (Tasees), stated that the liberation of the border triangle by the Rapid Support Forces represents a qualitative shift in the balance of power on the ground, given yhe areas’ inherent benefit as a strategic center of gravity where regional and international interests intersect.

She added that the region is geographically and geopolitically important because it grants a tactical advantage to any force controlling it, in terms of border coordination, control of crossings, and directing the flow of weapons and fighters.

Moreover, Militarily, control of the border triangle area provides an alternative supply route, flexible withdrawal lines, and bases for launching -defensive or offensive- rapid military operations. In addition, it allows for air and ground surveillance on a massive scale.

Lina Mahdi shared that the liberation of the border triangle area is a victory that redraws the boundaries of influence and grants the Rapid Support Forces a leading position inregards to  the Sudanese issue, starting a new chapter in the struggle for influence and the path to achieving a solution.

The Rapid Support Forces officially announced the liberation of the border triangle area on Wednesday, in a qualitative step that will surely create an impact along several combat fronts.

The Forces stated that their advancement into the northern desert axis represents a strategic shift in securing borders and protecting the nation, particularly in response to repeated incursions by the mercenary Armed Movements fighting alongside the Sudanese Army.

The Rapid Support Forces are attempting to seize control of as much territory as possible in the northern region, amidst expectations that the coming days will witness an extensive military campaign,  in an effort to gain control of as much territory as possible in this region.
