Arabi: Severing ties with the UAE is a political farce and distraction

Mohamed Hassan Arabi, a leader in the Sudanese Congress Party (SCoP) and former Governor of North Darfur state in the transitional government under the leadership of former Prime Minister, Abdullah Hamdok; described the decision by the Port Sudan government’s Security and Defense Council to sever ties with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) as “an internal political distraction,” aimed at rebuilding the collapsed internal front around the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) through emotional mobilization against an external party.

In a press statement, Arabi described the aforementioned decision as one that doesn’t amount to the level of a genuine Sovereign decision, but is rather “a contrived show issued not by the Security and Defense Council but by the Sovereignty Council, if it had any real constitutional or political weight.”

The leader in the (SCoP) added, “Its rather noteworthy that the Commander-in-Chief of the Sudanese Army, Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, completely ignored the decision during his appearance just hours following its issuance, despite it being the most dangerous and significant diplomatic decision in Sudan’s modern history. He failed to mention the (UAE), moreover, he didn’t even allude to the decision, in a blatant indication that the decision is devoid of even a shred of seriousness.”

The former Governor pointed out that the decision appears to be designed for domestic consumption and will be dissolved at the first mediation attempt from Ankara, Riyadh, or Cairo, given the vital economic interests that bind Port Sudan to Abu Dhabi. He continued, “What is taking place at the moment is nothing more than a failed propaganda play that reflects the confusion of a de facto authority suffering from internal and external isolation.”
