An increase in electricity tariffs for all sectors

The de facto authority in Port Sudan made a decision to increase electricity tariffs for all sectors, explaining that their decision comes within the context of addressing the rising costs of production due to the rising cost of production inputs and the scarcity of foreign currency necessary to provide spare parts and maintenance.

The Sudanese Electricity Distribution Company Ltd. (SEDC) shared in a press release on Monday that it had taken this step as part of the process of developing the network and improving the services provided to citizens.

“In light of the current economic challenges facing the electricity sector, along with the significant increase in the cost of production inputs and the scarcity of foreign currency necessary to provide spare parts and maintenance,” according to (SEDC).

The eastern states of Sudan are also experiencing widespread power outages, disrupting the operation of markets, hospitals, service centers, and water supply. This is due to Ethiopia’s suspension of the electricity interconnection with Sudan and the disruption of the feeder line from the Merowe Dam due to the ongoing armed conflict.
