Amidst Medicine Shortages.. Cholera and Dengue Fever ravage Eastern and Central Sudan
The Federal Emergency Operations Center revealed an increase in the rate of Cholera infection in the states of Kassala and White Nile, while Khartoum and Kassala were considered the most affected states by Dengue Fever.
In addition, volunteers in the cities of New Halfa and Sennar revealed to (Darfur 24) the lack of medicines and intravenous solutions, which caused a significant increase in the number of deaths.
The Emergency Center attributed the increase in Cholera infection rates in Kassala to the wave of displacement the state recently witnessed from Al-Jazeera, coinciding with a decrease in the rate of Cholera infection in some other states.
The “Epidemiological Situation Report” reviewed by the Center reported the registration of (138) new Cholera cases, including two deaths, noting that El-Gedaref state recorded (72) cases out of the total new cases, while Al-Jazeera state recorded (24) cases, including two deaths, Kassala state recorded (17) cases, (10) cases were recorded in River Nile state, (8) cases in Sennar, and (7) cases in the Red Sea state, bringing the cumulative Cholera rate in the country to (30880) cases, including (887) deaths.
While the Dengue Fever Epidemiological Situation Report reported the registration of (91) new cases from Kassala state solely and no deaths occurred, bringing the cumulative number of cases to (6011) cases, including (12) deaths.
In a related context, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) stated in a report that the Cholera epidemic continues to spread throughout Sudan, with the number of cases reaching about (28,400), including (836) associated deaths in (11) states in less than four months.
The new recorded cases of Cholera and Dengue Fever come amid difficulties in obtaining medicines and medical supplies as well as in delivering them to the areas affected by the epidemic.
The city of New Halfa Emergency Room revealed a severe shortage of medicines and medical supplies related to Cholera in the Isolation center.
