“Kamal Abdul Maarouf” in Port Sudan is likely a harbinger of war !

Rasha Awad

In my opinion, the dialogue revolving around this retired officer being the Egyptians’ messenger to Al-Burhan seeking to convince him to make peace and keep the distance between the Army and the Islamists, is completely misleading!

Why?

Firstly, who is Lt. Gen. Kamal Abdul Maarouf ?

He is an ideological Islamist officer with close ties to Iran. He was the Chief of Staff and in this capacity was a member of the Security Committee that decided to overthrow Al-Bashir on the 11th of April 2019. He became Awad Ibn Auf’s deputy in the Military Council. The Islamists knew that Awad Ibn Auf wouldn’t find acceptance.

Their plan was for Abdul Maarouf to assume the presidency of the Military Council, and thus their strategic plan would succeed! To overthrow only Omar Al-Bashir while maintaining the regime, especially the military security organization! The plan was for this organization to control a very short transitional period followed by rigged elections with predetermined results that would restore the Islamists power in a new guise to continue the “Inqaz” era! The best candidate for this task is this Kamal Abdul Maarouf!

However, that particular plan was met with failure, and I have previously stated -in writing- that the period from April 11th to the 13th, while short in terms of a time frame (48 hours), was full of dramatic transformations and an overwhelming number of details, some of which were leaked in Hemedti’s conversations on a number of occasions, and the rest will certainly be included in Sana’s records.

Unfortunately, the most important part of which, is in the files of regional and international Intelligence Services that sold, bought, invested, and extended their hands and feet to Al-Kizan’s Security and Military authorities, ruining the political scene in the transitional period in accordance.

Hence, we cannot be optimistic about Kamal Abdul Maarouf’s arrival in Port Sudan and his meetings with Al-Burhan !

Unfortunately, the appearance of this man on the scene portends military escalation and doesn’t herald peace, and portends further control by Al-Kizan over the Army, not the opposite. The arms deals, the arrival of Russian fighters and experts to Port Sudan, as well as thwarting the “Geneva” talks, all indicate that the Islamists are betting on war, not peace, and for that purpose they can sell everything on Sudanese soil to the Russians, Iranians, or Egyptians, and they won’t care about the dire consequences for Sudan’s unity.

The Islamists’ eternal problem is firmly believing that the laws of political society and the laws of history don’t apply to them! They suspect -and indeed some suspicions are sins- that they are an exception by virtue of their existence in a higher rank than ordinary people! Hence why they didn’t catch the hint on the 11th of April 2019! History was hinting very blatantly and simply; The era of the Islamists ruling Sudan through military force is over, it won’t be restored and they cannot turn back the clock !

Historical experiences convey that when any dictatorial regime becomes divided within itself, large cracks appearing on its wall of resistance, and then a popular uprising or revolution explodes, the complete collapse of this regime is the judgment of history, and the regime’s members must seriously consider reinventing themselves in accordance with the conditions of the future, not thinking about restoring the past !

Igniting this war and insisting on its continuation in hopes that the Islamists will return to power on the back of the Army also indicates an inability to pick up and understand historical signals well !

This war, even if it continues for a hundred years as they say, won’t succeed in restoring their power! Simply put, history has spoken and it won’t back down!
