How would you like your coffee?

Abdul Hafeez Maryoud

Our professor Mohammed Mohammed Khair, “From the ends of the earth,” insists on repeating that; “The Arabs in Darfur don’t have a political project..the non-Arab are the ones who do.” This stems from his experiences as part of the “Abuja” negotiations, during the days of the late Majzoub Al-Khalifa, heading the delegation.

The negotiations that brought Arcua Minnawi as a Senior Assistant to the President of the Republic, Omar Al-Bashir, in 2006, three years after the start of the Darfur crisis.

I have repeatedly, as we responded to the invitations of our professor Mohammed Mohammed Khair, to have some “barbecue” in “Awlad Omdurman” restaurant, in the Southeastern corner of Khartoum Airport -may God hasten its construction in the new State of Sudan- wished to ask him if he had known in the modern history of Sudan about political project founded on an ethnic or tribal basis. How do you conclude that (the Arabs of Darfur) are one fabric, that must establish a political project ?

Do you see ?

Less than a year before the outbreak of the April 15th war between the Rapid Support Forces and the Army, the phrase was present in abundance in the professor’s talks. Just as the name “Ali Karti” was mentioned; the godfather of the next stage of Sudan’s history.

This was accomplished through clever settlements that took place and are taking place in connection with the Gulf axis, America and Egypt. Our professor doesn’t hide his annoyance and disgust with the Forces of Freedom and Change “FFC”. He also doesn’t hide his support for the military orientations that were established by the October 25th Coup, considering the (Military Component) a single bloc.. Which isn’t likely to be affected by a division, let alone a war.

The elitist laziness places future predictions in a narrow, pitch-black tunnel. The future “settlements” for Sudan were founded on static information. On (fragile facts), which didn’t take into account the “possibility of transformation, change, and rebellion.”

Of course, the prediction relies on the history of the Mahdist State, and the loyalties of the “Ansar” sect that followed among most of the inhabitants of the West, and Darfur in particular. In addition, the first learners, and those most involved in the educational ladder, were from non-Arab ethnicities in Darfur.

The Darfur Renaissance Front is considered the main stone in building the stereotypical classification of the ability to possess a “political project.” Daoud Yahya Bolad’s rebellion, subsequently joining the Popular Movement led by Dr. John Garang, introducing the concept of armed struggle in Darfur, the Habbaniya and Beni Halba Arabs confronted him as a result, assisting the Central government, all will go a long way to support the theory.

The Arabs of Darfur are a herd that follows Central policies, while “Political thinking, the Political Project” will be monopolied by the “non-Arab tribes”. Since 2003, the Movements that seemed to be rebelling against the Central government were a group of alliances of the Zaghawa, Fur, Masalit, Midob tribes, and to some extent, the Berti tribe.

The “Arabs of Darfur” were mobilized to confront the Armed struggle of those Movements. Starting from Musa Hilal’s leading the cavalry, all the way to “the Border Guards” and “Rapid Support Forces”.

Do you see?

The lazy elite stereotyping made the calculations shameful and extremely lacking, in regards to defining the April 15th war and dealing with it. Which is the reason for the ongoing confusion in the transition from the “Rapid Support Forces Coup”, to the “Rebellion of Rapid Support Forces as well as the Forces of Freedom and Change”, then to “Tribal Militia”, and to the “Daglo Militia”, onto the “UAE Agents”… etc.

The elitist laziness cannot comprehend the possibility of other tribal formations, or other civilian formations (partisan and non-partisan) aligning with the Rapid Support Forces. Therefore, all methods of “crisis solutions” are rendered useless. Especially when the world deals with “Sudan’s data and its existing facts” in ways that belittle and exclude that traditional view.

Since the beginning of the war, the Rapid Support Commander has never declared a state of alert. Similar to what the Army leadership and the Islamic Movement that adopts the “Battle of Dignity” rhetoric did. However, the numbers of Rapid Support Forces fighters are steadily multiplying in a surprising manner in the states of Sennar and Blue Nile.

And you will be surprised to discover that El-Gedaref and Kassala have become outside the “State of Port Sudan” and outside the “safe states” zone. Which is an issue that necessitates reconsidering the definition of war as well as the “facts of Sudan” that have become part of history.

Because the current battle is a one of total, comprehensive, elite ignorance that is likely to destroy everything you knew.

Do you see ?

For the tenth time, elite laziness is manifested in a military manner when Lt. Gen. Yasser Al-Atta sets his conditions for negotiating with the Rapid Support Forces: to withdraw from the cities under its control, to gather in camps determined by the Army Forces, then to hand over heavy weaponry.

Al-Atta -with his elitist stupidity- cannot comprehend that the Rapid Support Forces managed to chase the Army out of those cities and states… and even from his General Command Headquarters… hence the Army setting conditions for negotiation is nothing more than a continuation of the general stupidity.

What do I wish to convey ?

It doesn’t seem that the “Arabs of Darfur” have a political project… that is true. But that doesn’t mean they are unable to engage in a major project that is being created… of which this ongoing war represents the tip of the spear.
The Rapid Support Forces don’t necessarily realize their role in the profound and massive change that Sudan will witness… but they are performing their role efficiently, which will force all the “elites” to re-sharpen their tools and change their knowledge production systems.

The upcoming years will prove that.
